Tampa FGD order

Tampa Electric Company has awarded Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control Inc. a contract to design, supply and install a wet flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system at the company`s Big Bend power station in Apollo Beach, Florida.

The system will be installed on Units 1 and 2 at the coal-fired plant, and will be commissioned in early 2000. The turnkey contract includes the supply and installation of a dual flow tray absorber using limestone forced oxidation chemistry with a dibasic acid additive.

The high velocity absorber will be one of the largest capacity absorbers installed at an electric power generation facility in the USA. At full load operation, the FGD system will be capable of removing 95 per cent of the SO2. The treated effluent stream from the absorber will produce commercial grade gypsum that can be used in the manufacture of wallboard.
