Hydrogen dryer finds new niche

Four hydrogen dryers, supplied by Pneumatic Products Corp. (PPC), have been installed on generators at Carolina Light & Power`s Roxboro E&G plant and at 16 CP&L stations in North and South Carolina.

Until recently, their main application had been at peak-load stations where moisture is introduced more readily due to low pressure operation while the generator is in turning gear. But with findings regarding the effects of hydrogen impurity, as well as a trend for more fossil fired, base load stations converting to some type of cyclic operation, the need for PPC`s hydrogen coolant purifier (HCP) will expand to support other power applications.

The HCP is a filtration system for removing water, oil and hydrocarbon vapours as well as particulates.
