FirstEnergy Corp. and Allegheny Energy Inc. were notified Jan. 7 that the U.S. Department of Justice completed reviewing the companies’ proposed merger and closed its investigation.
The companies made their Hart-Scott-Rodino filing with the Federal Trade Commission and the DOJ on May 25, 2010. The companies have received merger approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Virginia State Corporation Commission and the West Virginia Public Service Commission and have proposed settlements pending with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and the Maryland Public Service Commission. Shareholders for both FirstEnergy and Allegheny Energy approved proposals related to the proposed merger.
