The Moroccan government has selected a consortium of CMS Generation and ABB Energy Ventures to negotiate a definitive agreement for the privatization and expansion of the Jorf Lasfar power plant, located southwest of Casablanca in Morocco. CMS and ABB, both based in the United States, will each hold a 50 percent interest in the consortium.

Privatization of the coal-fueled plant includes ownership and operation of two 330-MW generating units which are nearing completion, along with two existing 330-MW units. The 1,320-MW output of the expanded plant will be sold to Office National d`Electricité, the Moroccan national utility. Total cost will exceed (US)$1 billion. The Jorf Lasfar privatization is the first opening of international private investment in electric power generation allowed by the Moroccan government.
