Thermal plants keeping Colombia’s power sector afloat

Thermal plants and associated fuel transportation infrastructure in Colombia should have a more decisive role to cover electricity demand by 2020, experts have said.

Thermal power plants are taking a leading role while the El Niàƒ±o weather phenomenon makes its presence felt.

An official plan indicates that electricity consumption and peak demand load are expected to grow by 13 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.

The forecast includes demand from energy-intensive industrial users such as Rubiales and Ecopetrol, and the planned interconnection with Panama.
