Panama’s power generation sector monopoly

The electricity generation sector in Panama lies in the hands of too few, according to a report by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The entity said AES Panama and Enel Fortuna produce almost 93 per cent of all of electricity generated by the private sector.

Like Panama, Central America has just five groups that control most of the electricyt production in the region, ECLAC said.

These groups are: Gas Natural with a 22 per cent stake; EPM with a 21 per cent share; ICE-CNFL of Costa Rica with 19 per cent; ENEE of Honduras with 15 per cent and AES with 10 per cent.
