The government of Guatemala recently hosted the Investment Summit 2013 as part of an effort to attract much-needed direct foreign investment into the country.

According to Spanish news agency Efe, 234 potential investors from Europe, Americas and Asia gathered at the meeting.

The largest representation from Europe came from Spain, with 30 companies, and many involved in the renewable energy sector.

Efe reports that many of the Spanish companies are considering making Guatemala their operational centre for Central America and the Caribbean countries.

Guatemala is reportedly looking for $3bn in investments in its energy sector to 2015.
