El Paso Energy International Co. has acquired a 31.15 percent interest in the Czech Republic ECKG power project, with partners NRG Energy and Stredoceska Energeticka. The (US)$401 million project is a 250 MW coal-fired and 66 MW natural gas-fired expansion of an existing 27 MW generating plant. El Paso has also signed a joint development agreement for a (US)$200 million power plant, to be developed with Furnas Centrais Eletricas, BHP of Brazil Energy, Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras and British Gas of Brazil. The 450 MW, gas-fired plant is to be sited in Rio de Janeiro, with commercial operation to start in 2000.
