Brazil gives go ahead to operate Maranhao III as an IPP

Parnaiba II Geracao de Energia SA has been given the green light by Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy to install and operate the Maranhao III thermoelectric power plant as an independent power producer (IPP).

The natural gas fired facility, to be located in the Santo Antonio dos Lopes municipality of northeastern Maranhao state, will have a total installed capacity of 499 MW and a guaranteed average power output of 471 MW.

Maranhao III is part of the MPX Parnaiba thermal power plant complex, which is majority-owned by Brazilian power company MPX Energia (70 per cent), with local oil and gas firm Petra Energia, holding the remaining share.
