Argentine-US joint implementation

A power plant repowering project in Argentina has been approved by the USA as a “joint implementation” project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project will turn a simple cycle plant into a combined cycle facility, allowing 185 MW of additional power to be produced without increasing fuel use.

The project was endorsed in March by the US Initiative on Joint Implementation, a multi-federal agency panel. It will turn the 354 MW Agua del Cajon power plant in Neuquen Province into a 539 MW combined cycle plant. Agua del Cajon, owned by Argentine utility Capex, already runs on natural gas.

The aim of the government panel is to encourage US investment in emissions- reduction projects in other countries. Completion is scheduled for 2000, when reductions in carbon dioxide emissions should be around 1mt annually.
