13 May, 2002 – Italy’s centre-right government led by Silvio Berluscomi is expected to announce today the appontment of Giuseppe Morchio as chief executive of Enel, the country’s dominent power producer.
Morchini, a former executive at tyre maker Pirelli, will take over from Franco Tato, who will remain at Enel as chairman. The appointment of Morchini, who is 59, is a victory for those government officials from several parties who have been lobbying for a younger manager to replace Mr Tato who is 69.
Mr Tato had been reluctant to step up to the role of chairman and watch a new CEO change his strategy for the multi-utility.
The government is also expected to announce the appointment of 50-year-old Stafano Cao to manage oil and gas group Eni with Vittorio Mincato becoming chairman.
