ST Microelectronics has announced that it will be working with Enel, Electrolux, Indesit and Telecom Italia to push efficient electricity use among private homeowners in Italy in the Energy@Home consortium.

The Energy@Home initiative will develop a system in which smart appliances will be able to independently manage themselves, as a step in the development of a fully integrated Smart Grid in Italy. The initiative will allow appliances to interact with information from the grid to function at non-peak time, and assist in the automatic balance of demand and supply.

ST Microelectronics and Enel said that the combination of their technologies will give consumers detailed knowledge of their consumption patterns and the ability to optimise it. They will also be able to use a Coordinated Management Mode, which will be able to automatically select time of operations of specific household appliances.
