Solartron, Ansaldo partner for CMS installation in Italy

Solartron Instruments Inc., in conjunction with Ansaldo Energia, has successfully commissioned a Monsor turbine on-line condition monitoring system (CMS) at Mincio Thermal Power Station in Italy. The system is expected to make a major contribution to the station`s program to extend the operating life of its 80- and 160-MW turboalternators.

Ansaldo Energia, prime contractor for the power station program, based its Monsor system on Solartron`s high-performance turbine monitoring system, the 1051. The Mincio contract is valued at (US)$190,800.

Monsor replaces the station`s paper-based vibration monitoring system– typical of small-scale power producers–with a sophisticated on-line CMS that will significantly improve maintenance and overhaul planning and help maximize turbine availability.

The combined oil- and gas-fueled station, at Ponti sul Mincia, near Verona, is a build-own-operate plant for the municipal authorities of Brescia, Verona, Rovereto and Vincenze. The authorities also provide transmission and distribution through the local grid, which is interconnected to the national grid operated by Enel, the state-owned utility.

The station was commissioned in 1966 with an 80-MW turboalternator, and capacity was increased in 1983 with the installation of the 160-MW unit. Both units were supplied and installed by Ansaldo Energia.

The Monsor is a highly modular CMS offering both dynamic and static measurement combined with powerful analysis facilities during turbine run-up, coast-down and on-load, along with the ability to increase machine lifecycle through fault diagnosis.

Computer technology allows signal and data processing power to be distributed throughout the system to maximize results, while the software offers a sensitive graphical interface to improve the productivity of plant personnel.
