A recent report from Green Tech Media, “The Smart Grid in Europe 2012-2016”, claims that the rollout of Smart Grids across Europe will give more momentum to the photovoltaic (PV) sector, as consumers become increasingly aware of their energy consumption and how to reduce their bills.

The EU’s Third Energy Package dictates that 80 per cent of European households must be equipped with smart meters by the end of the decade.

The report suggests that one effect of this will be to boost the uptake of PV.

The author of the report, Geert-Jan van der Zanden, said: “Consumers will be able to see exactly how much electricity they are using, how much their PV system is producing, and how much they are feeding back into the grid. As more smart meters are put in place, it will be easier, and a much more obvious choice, for homeowners to have micro-renewables installed.”
