Power stays on as fuel supply facilities change

BPA of Herts, England, has contracted to design and install new heavy-fuel supply facilities to the on-site power generation plants at British Steel`s Port Talbot, South Wales, works. The facilities will rationalize and replace the existing fuel systems while the plant continues operations. The current fuel lines will be de-commissioned.

Fuel oil for the power generation plants will be drawn from the blast furnace ring-main, already operated by BPA, and new spur pipelines will deliver the oil through new pumping and meter stations. Sliding vane pumps have been chosen to cater for the variable-flow rate demands of the power stations, while maintaining a constant pressure. The existing pumping facilities of the blast furnace ring-main will be upgraded to handle the greater capacity and the product flow, and pressure-control systems will be modified.
