A consortium led by MAN Diesel & Turbo has completed the second of three planned power plants the company is building for the French energy supplier Électricité de France (EDF) on the Caribbean island of Martinique.

MAN Diesel & Turbo was the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor as well as having responsibility for commissioning the 12 type 18V48/60 engines used in the project.

The plant, located in Bellefontaine, in the west of the island, has a capacity of 220 MW and covers around 60% of the island’s power needs.

Heat from the engines is also used to generate the hot water required at the site.

Replacing the former power plant, which was around 30 years old, the new installation reduced fuel consumption by some 15%. The former plant was also powered by 10 MAN Pielstick engines.
