Internet ‘hotel’ to build own power plant

December 07, 2000 — The Internet service provider Guardian iT Group, is sidestepping electricity supply problems in London by constructing its own power supply plant.

The company will build a 24MW plant at its site near Heathrow airport. The company is aiming to build a web hosting centre and the local electricity supplier Scottish and Southern Energy failed to ensure that electricity could be provided for the project in time for its completion.

Garry Growns, the director in charge of the project, warned that power supply problems across Europe could hold back the $16 billion market for web hosting centres unless other internet service companies adopted a similar approach.
