German parliament bans fracking

The Bundestag, the German parliament has decided to ban hydraulic fracturing or fracking.Bundestag

While some test drilling for scientific purposes is permitted, as well as conventional fracking for deep-lying gas which doesn’t involve extraction from shale, state governments and independent experts must give explicit permission for the process to go ahead.

The ban will be reviewed in 2021, but Germany has for now joined France who banned the practice outright, and the Netherlands who introduced a five-year moratorium on shale exploration last year.

The Guardian reports that the government was prompted to act after public outcry when oil companies said they would move to seek licenses for exploration fracking projects that had been on hold for five years.
