EU directive on energy efficiency passed

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a new EU directive on energy efficiency, which includes binding measures to assist the EU in meeting its goal of boosting energy efficiency by 20 per cent by 2020.

The vote was passed by a large majority (632-25) and now just needs formal recognition by national governments before implementation goes through.

Platts reports that the deal includes a requirement for EU energy suppliers or distributors to deliver energy savings of 1.5 per cent a year compared with business as usual across their customers from 2014 to 2020.

The compromise also calls for the EC to review action taken by national governments by end-2014 to see if they are on track to make the 2020 goal.
