Enel-led Group Wins 1.2 Trillion Lire Power Plant Contract in Dubai

ROME-A consortium led by Enelpower has won a 1.2 trillion lire contract from the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority to build a combined cycle power plant in Dubai. Enel is broadening it operations due to Italy opening its electricity market to competition. Previously, Enel had held a monopoly in the peninsula.

Enelpower will build a power plant and Impregilo SpA’s Fisia Italimpianti will build a desalination plant in Jebel Ali. The power plant will cost 800 billion lire and the desalination plant is valued at 400 billion.

The Jebel Ali plant, according to Enel is the biggest ever combined plant for the production of electricity and desalinated water in the country’s history. It will provide 920 MW of power and is scheduled to be completed in 32 months.

“The contract marks a further success for the company’s overseas expansion strategy, and confirms Enelpower’s competitiveness, even in countries, like Dubai, that require the use of advanced technology,” said Luigi Giuffrida, Enelpower managing director.
