Egypt-France power deal
The Egyptian government has signed a $760m deal with Electricité de France (EDF) for the construction of new power generation capacity in Egypt.
Construction on two 650 MW natural gas fired power plants will begin in 2000. The plants will be located at opposite ends of the Suez Canal in the Gulf of Suez and Port Said. EDF will operate the plants for 20 years before turning them over to the government.
• Siemens KWU is to construct Egypt`s first private power station under a recently-signed contract with Midelec. A 180 MW gas turbine based power will enter operation in late 2000.
