Clarke Energy wins largest horticultural CHP order in Europe

Clarke Energy, the UK`s exclusive distributor of Jenbacher gas powered generators, has secured a major CHP (Combined Heat & Power) project for nurseries on the Isle of Wight, UK, in what is the largest ever CHP order in the European horticultural industry.

Secured in conjunction with Independent Energy, the project is for a consortium of growers on the island which market their produce through Wight Salads Ltd.

The project will generate 36MW supplied by eighteen model 616, 1500 rpm Jenbacher gas engines, each producing 2MW for a total of six nursery sites. Custom-designed for constant duty baseload operation the eng-ines do not require special foundations for installation and offer proven longevity in the horticultural environment.

Clarke are able to supply the engines as a complete factory-built package, all rigorously tested on test-beds at Jenbacher`s factory in Austria, allowing quicker commissioning once on-site.

In addition to reducing the energy costs of the nurseries, the by-product of power generation, namely heat and CO2 from exhaust gases, are used to increase the yields of the greenhouse produce. The surplus electricity from the installation will be sold to homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight, and `exported` to the English mainland.

In addition, Clarke Energy has increased its impact on the UK horticultural market by winning the contract to supply 10MW to Valley Grown Salads in Essex, UK. Here, they will install a CHP system comprising three Jenbacher 620 models, each of 2.7MW size, and one 616 model delivering the other 2MW.
