British Energy adds work management system to its energy system

LONDON, UK, Jan. 23, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) à‚– SeeBeyond (Nasdaq:SBYN), a global provider of eBusiness Integration (eBI) solutions, today announced that British Energy, one of the U.K.’s largest electricity companies, selected SeeBeyond’s award-winning e*Gateà¢â€ž¢ Integrator to streamline its business processes and create an integrated supply web throughout its Power Stations.

British Energy, as an existing SeeBeyond customer, has already deployed SeeBeyond solutions to act as the foundation of its energy trading capability.

Throughout Europe, competition is forcing gas and electricity utilities to re-evaluate their strategies for managing new risks. SeeBeyond’s solution supports the capabilities required to operate under the U.K.’s New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) designed to bring more competition into the market for wholesale electricity in England and Wales, a market with a turnover of more than 7 billion (pounds).

e*Gate allows participants, such as power exchanges, to implement parallel systems both to trade electricity among themselves and at the same time interact with the central systems. This makes the program one of the largest and most comprehensive IT developments in recent years.

“As a result of using e*Gate we will see a much faster transfer of data throughout the system, giving us increased flexibility,” said Weston Piper, project manager at British Energy. “The speed and ease of deployment of the product significantly reduces the number of interfaces required; cutting down on programming time and cost. We expect to see a much faster turnaround of purchase orders resulting in goods and materials being received at more regular intervals, ensuring efficiency of operations.”

British Energy, with around 20% of the generation market and 5,500 employees, was looking for a solution to manage both internal and external supply procurement processes. Selecting SeeBeyond, British Energy has deployed e*Gate to integrate core work management and financial IT systems, seamlessly transferring data among multiple sites.

e*Gate has enabled British Energy to simplify its business processes by reducing the number of complex interfaces to create a more robust and scalable solution. Major benefits are achieved through a significant reduction in error rates and processing times.

“Energy customers in the newly deregulated market have had to analyze their eProcess flows among suppliers and optimize their supply chains,” said David Bennett, vice president and general manager of EMEA for SeeBeyond.

“Individual SeeBeyond customers have experienced close to a 300% ROI. Energy is the ultimate perishable commodity and the next evolution is to take those gains to an exchange.”

SeeBeyond is rapidly becoming the defacto standard in the global energy industry with customers such as Power Gen, Innogy (formerly National Power), Northern Electric and Gas, British Energy, Scottish and Southern Energy, Portland General Electric, Equilon, ERCOT, Florida Power & Light, Texas Utilities and TOSCO, selecting SeeBeyond to streamline their businesses and manage internal and external supply web processes.

As a result of the successful implementation of the first phase of its new work management system, British Energy is evaluating opportunities to exploit SeeBeyond’s eBusiness integration solutions in the next phase of the project.
