Baltic link breaks records

ABB is laying a 150-mile high-voltage dc transmission link under the Baltic sea. The cable, rated at 600 MW capacity with 450-kV dc, will run from Kruseberg, Sweden, to Herrenwyk, Germany. The project will set new world records for both length and capacity.

The link will be owned and operated by a new company, Baltic Cable AB, which was established by the two largest Swedish electricity suppliers, Vattenfall AB and Sydraft AB, along with Pruessen-Elektra of Germany.
