Siemens Power Generation Group (KWU) is building a 16.4 MW combined-cycle power plant in Surabaya/East Java under a turnkey contract from P.T. Emdeki Utama, Gresik. Global electricity consumption to hit 20 trillion kWh by 2015

As the world moves into the next century, demand for electricity is expected to increase more rapidly than demand for other forms of energy. Consumption of electricity worldwide is projected to approach 20 trillion kWh in 2015 from a 1995 level of 11.4 trillion kWh, according to the recently released Energy Information Administration report, International Energy Annual 1997.

EME completes acquisition

Edison Mission Energy, an Edison International company, has announced financial closing on the acquisition of the remaining 49 percent interest in the Loy Yang B power station held by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). The transaction makes Edison Mission Energy the sole owner of the 1,000 MW station near Melbourne, Australia. The company acquired 51 percent of Loy Yang B from the SECV in December 1992.

New Zealand plans plant sales

Ministers from New Zealand plan to sell eight power stations which are not considered part of the core business of Electricity Corporation of New Zealand, the government-owned generating company. Stations to be sold include Matahina, Coleridge, Highbank, Cobb, Kaitawa, Tuai, Piripaua and Mangahao. They are for sale only to local energy companies or Maori interests, not the global market. The government does not plan to privatize the main assets of the state electric utilities.
