Shanghai contracts Waigaoqiao supercritical station

Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Co. has selected Sargent & Lundy as the architect/engineering firm for its Waigaoqiao power station, a 900 to 1,000 MW supercritical coal-fired installation. Waigaoqiao will be the first supercritical plant of this size in China and is therefore expected to serve as the model for this size supercritical unit there in the future.

The PRC`s first supercritical plant is also in the Shanghai area. The 2 X 600 MW Shidongkou Second Power Plant entered operation in 1992 for Huaneng International Power Development Corp. Shidongkou has recorded the best heat rate of any coal-fired plant in China.

Sargent & Lundy has also announced a (US)$33 million contract from Rain Calcining Ltd. for the Rain Power Generation Facility in Vishnakhaputnam, India. This facility will generate an average of 41 MW of surplus electricity, to be sold to the industrial consumers in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The facility is part of a calcining plant designed to produce 750 metric tons of calcined petroleum coke a day. Steam for the turbine will be supplied from a waste heat recovery boiler and a circulating fluidized bed boiler. Foster Wheeler/PyroPower, ABB Power Generation and Wheelabrator are subcontractors in the project.
