Nuclear generation to cut emissions
Hans Blix, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director-general, indicated that wider use of nuclear power could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming. He said some governments–Japan, South Korea, China and Eastern Europe–used environmental concerns in defending an expanded use of nuclear power. “However, at present most countries are continuing to expand their use of fossil fuels and are failing to meet targets which they have set for themselves to restrain their emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Blix. He said the IAEA was dealing with other areas of concern, including safety in nuclear power operation and waste disposal and illicit trafficking in nuclear materials.
