Mitsubishi Electric Corp has this week started testing its latest smart grid technology.

The Japanese firm is trialling products that it estimates could be worth $17bn a year and focus on balancing demand and supply, distribution network management and future grid operation.

The need for a smart grid in Japan has been heightened following the earthquake and tsunami at Fukushima earlier this year. A smart grid is seen as a robust continuity plan for such disasters.
