KEPCO awards (US)$200 million Yonggwang contract to ABB Nuclear

ABB has announced a contract worth more than (US)$200 million for Yonggwang Units 5 and 6 to be built for Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) in Chonnam Province on the west coast of Korea.

ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Systems will provide engineering design and components for two 1,000-MWe light water nuclear steam supply systems and associated nuclear technology, based on an advanced version of its System 80R design.

ABB said the contracts demonstrate the success of Korea`s standardization program for nuclear plants. Units 5 and 6 are scheduled to enter operation in June of 2001 and 2002, respectively. The units will join four other similar plants being built for KEPCO`s national grid. Units 3 and 4 are expected to enter operation this year and Ulchin Units 3 and 4, being built in Kyongbuk Province, will follow in 1998 and 1999. The System 80 is now the “Korea Standard Plant” design. KEPCO, with 30,000 MW, is Korea`s only electricity provider.
