India expects emission norms for power plants soon

INDIA, Oct. 10, 2000à‚–The Indian government will shortly be notifying emission norms for power generation plants, according to the Union Power Minister, Suresh Prabhu.

Speaking at a conference organised in New Delhi 10 Oct. by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Prabhu said the Power Ministry and the Ministry of Environment and Forests were in the process of chalking out a programme to jointly work from the planning stage of the power projects to ensure better compliance of environmental norms.

Prabhu said the group needed to integrate environmental planning with economic planning while setting targets for the industry.

The Minister stressed the need for the country to have closer interaction and synergise internationally for maintaining and increasing forest cover.

On the power sector front, Prabhu said that he had called for a meeting with all the independent power producers to discuss the challenges and issues of the sector. Subsequently, they would be assigned specific targets and responsibilities that would be reviewed periodically by the Ministry.
