Honduran state-owned utility Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica (ENEE) has announced that it needs $160m to overhaul and upgrade two hydropower plants totalling 110 MW.

ENEE said it expects to receive $28m from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), while the remaining $132m would come from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). A delegation from the Honduran government is set to visit Japan to complete negotiations for the loan, which is expected to be signed in March.

Upgrades to the two hydropower plants, Canaveral and Rio Lindo, would increase their combined generation capacity to 126 MW.
