Help for Indonesia

The Asian Development Bank is to lend Indonesia $400m to help restructure its troubled power sector. The sharp decrease in the rupiah and difficulties in raising electricity tariffs has caused state utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to suffer heavy losses.

The programme aims to: establish a competitive market in Java and Bali by 2003; adjust tariffs to ensure the financial viability of PLN in a transition period; increase the private sector role and strengthen the regulatory environment.
