Fluke launches new power measurement calibration standard

Norwich, UK-based Fluke Precision Measurement Ltd. has launched its 6100A Electrical Power Standard – a scaleable unit designed to provide highly accurate calibration for power meters, power quality analysers, power recorders and power meters with quality measurement capabilities.

The new equipment represents the first tangible fruits of Fluke’s acquisition of Wavetek-Datron in January 2000 and addresses the increasing demand for accurate power measurement arising from fragmentation and deregulation within the electric power sector globally.

The Fluke 6100A is a multi-phase, reliable source of phantom electrical power signals and power disturbances which mimics harmonic distortions, user-definable sags, swells and flicker. It is configurable to the differing power voltages and frequencies that have been adopted globally, enabling the user to select relevant values for the measurements being made.

“Prior to the 6100A, there was no single piece of equipment capable of calibrating instruments for a number of measurements, such as harmonics and flicker,” said David Coombes, Fluke’s UK product marketing manager at the product’s UK launch.

The 6100A operates with extremely low calibration uncertainties; voltage 100 ppm, current 100 ppm, frequency 50 ppm, power 200 ppm, phase 0.01 deg and modulated signals 0.25 per cent, all for sinusoidal or non sinusoidal signals.

Poland powers up on GT gensets

UK gas turbine generator set packager Centrax is to supply two 5.5 MWe generator sets for a ground-breaking project in Poland. The company also recently contracts in Taiwan and France.

In Poland, Centrax is supplying two CX501-KB7 indoor packages for a combined heat and power installation. The plant will be part of a new district heating scheme at Wladyslawowo, near Gdansk.

The gensets will be powered by Rolls-Royce gas turbines. The district heating scheme is part of an innovative project to supply gas fired plant as well as grid and gas supply connections. The equipment has been ordered by EnergoBaltic, a joint venture between Rolls-Royce Power Ventures, PetroBaltic and Hydromex.

Centrax recently installed and commissioned three gas turbine generator sets in France. The units were purchased by Elyo North East and have been installed in the districts of La Chapelle St. Luc (Troyes), Epinal and St. Quentin. Centrax also supplied three CX501-KB7 outdoor gensets to a manufacturing company in Taiwan.

Small is beautiful

California-based MGE UPS Systems has broken the size barrier with the introduction of its Pulsar Evolution UPS family. At only 1.75″ (4.45 cm) high and designed to protect servers, storage systems and networking equipment, the new Pulsar Evolution is the smallest UPS of its kind.

The Pulsar’s innovative design has allowed a doubling of power density to create the smallest 800 and 1100 VA UPS. The ultra-thin format, which is fast becoming the preferred size for rack-mounted server devices, was in the past only available up to 500 VA.

Available in three power ratings of 500, 800 and 110 VA, the new ultra-dense rackmount and desktop units offer users unsurpassed power protection for a wide variety of applications. It packs enough battery power to keep a hub, switch and router up for 45 minutes or a Windows 2000/NT server running for up to 25 minutes – enough time to ride through most power distrubances or implement an orderly shutdown.

Waste in Wales

Engineering company Peter Brotherhood has built a steam turbine worth almost à‚£1 million ($1.5 million) for a à‚£7 million waste-to-energy plant being developed at Crymlyn Burrows near Neath in south Wales. The 4.5 MW turbine will produce electricity to power local council buildings and street lights using fuel derived from domestic and commercial refuse.

The power plant is part of a à‚£32 million integrated waste treatment plant, which will also include recycling and composting, that is being developed by project company HLC (Neath Port Talbot) Ltd.

Cutting SF6

A new award-winning leak detector from ION Science of the UK is helping major power utilities across the world to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. SF6 gas is used in switchgear and has a greenhouse potential 23 900 times greater than carbon dioxide.

The Gas Check SF6 enables utilities to detect leaks of SF6 from the switchgear in their networks. The device is not only highly sensitive and easy to use, but also incorporates a new type of ionisation sensor which overcomes the health and safety implications of traditional radioactive ECD instruments.

Remsdaq powers up Thailand

In a contract worth over à‚£5m ($7.3m), over 3000 Remsdaq remote terminal units (RTUs) are currently being installed by the Thailand Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) in 50 substations and on over 2000 pole-mounted switches, reclosers and regulators.

The PEA operates numerous substations and distributes electricity to clients in 70 provinces around Thailand. It receives power from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand over 500 kV, 230 kV and 115 kV transmission lines and converts it to 69 kV and then to 11, 22 and 33 kV.

The whole project is managed by SNC Lavalin of Canada and the Callisto RTUs communicate with SNC’s distribution management and energy control systems, located at the regional and one national control centre, using system-wide radio links.

The RTUs allow users freedom in designing specific automation functions and enables them to set operational parameters, all of which are are readily downloadable remotely from the control centres as well as locally at the plant itself.

The RTUs’ tranducerless features are used extensively to provide advanced AC power measurement calculations, power quality data and harmonic and fault data analysis. All such data is available to the control centres through the communication system. RTU installation and other localisation activities are undertaken by Remsdaq’s long-term partner, Precise International Corp.

Clean boilers

Diamond Power Speciality Company has introduced the new HydroJet boiler cleaning system. One HydroJet device can replace a complete furnace wall of sootblowers, and is designed to clean division, furnace and wing walls. It can even clean across the entire width of the furnace inside many utility boilers, and sets a new standard for precision, reliability and water efficiency.

HydroJet removes slag from areas that conventional wall blowers will not clean and at a fraction of the time.

AVO finds solution with LV cables

AVO International has developed the latest range of Megger hand-held time-domain reflectometers. Huge savings in time and money can be made on locating faults in power cables particularly if they are buried or otherwise inaccessible.

The compact, easy-to-use TDR500, TDR1000 and TDR2000 instruments operate by transmitting a pulse into the cable, which is reflected by faults, such as short circuits, bad splices or conductor breaks. By measuring the time it takes for the reflected pulse to return from the fault, the instrument can calculate and display the exact distance to the problem.

Both the TDR1000 and TDR2000 are suitable for use on live circuits up to 150 V Installation Category III, or 300 V Installation Category II. By using test probes fitted with HRC fuses, the live working capability of these instruments is extended to 300 V Installation Category III, and it can be further extended to 600 V Installation Category III with the aid of an optional blocking filter.

The smallest and most competitively priced instrument in the range, the TDR500, is not suitable for live line working, but is a cost-effective choice for general-purpose use. It offers five operating ranges, from 30 m to 3 km, and features a tough ABS case which provides IP54 protection. Operation from dry cells or rechargeable batteries ensures maximum portability.

Up, up and away …

With plans to create an airship that can transport up to 160 t of cargo a distance of up to 10 000 km, CargoLifter is setting new standards in large-freight logistics in the power industry.

With its plans, CargoLifter hopes to be able to deliver oversized goods faster and cheaper than ever before. Manufacturers usually design products so that they can be transported as seperate pieces and reassembled at their destination. CargoLifter hopes to eliminate this process.

Potential CargoLifter customers who have already come on board are ABB, Alstom Power, MAN, Mitsui and Siemens as well as many other non-power industry companies. The CargoLifter design team is based at Briesen-Brand, Germany, at the site of a former Soviet military airport, where they plan to build two airships, each as big as an ocean liner.

A team of 200 engineers will help complete the CLI60 airship model that will be able to transport shipments such as entire prefabricated fast food restaurant buildings from Europe to Asia

New ABB MV contractors use vacuum technology

The new V-Contact medium voltage vacuum contractors from ABB use reliable vacuum technology to provide control and protection for motors, transformers, power factor correction banks and switching systems in a wide variety of industrial applications. The V-Contact offers the capability for remote control and integration in computerized control systems and is used for installation in prefabricated substations and switchboards.

The V-Contact has been designed for AC control applications requiring a high number of operations. The contractors are based around a moulded resin monobloc housing the vacuum interrupters, the moving contacts, the control electromagnet, the multi voltage control feeder and the auxiliary accessories. The compact, sturdy and easy to mount construction ensures a long electrical and mechanical life, with minimal maintenance.

Electrical latching is fitted as standard on the V-Contact which is available for rated voltages of 7.2 kV (V7) and 12 kV (V12) in fixed, withdrawable and single-pole versions. Mechanical latch versions are also available together with accessories which enable the V-Contact to be customized.

V7 contractors can be coupled with fuses from 6-450 A and the V12 with fuses from 6 A to 200 A. When fitted with suitable fuses the V-Contact can be used in circuits with fault levels up to 1000 MVA.

VA Tech wins in Algeria

VA Tech transmission & Distribution has been awarded a contract for the supply of a new 66/31.5 kV, 20 MVA mobile substation for the Kouba hydro plant which distributes potable water to the country’s capital, Algiers.

The €1.2m contract is an extension of an existing contract from Sonelgaz. The combined value of the contract, which covers seven previous mobile substations, is almost €9m.

The other seven substations were built over 12 months and are in operation around Algeria at Aflou, Zeribet-Hamed, Ouled Djellal, Ferdjioua, Tissemilt, Telagh, and Djebel-Onk.

APC’s PowerStruXure helps IT and facilities managers address the complex issue of forecasting dynamic processing loads. It can be installed and commissioned in data centres in a matter of hours, and helps reduce operating expenses and capital costs.

Emerson shows EPC abilities in Poland

Westinghouse Process Control, a business of Emerson Process Management, has been selected to provide its Ovation information and control system at Zespol Elektrocieplowni w Lodzi SA in central Poland.

In addition to installing the process control system, Westinghouse will manage the civil engineering and public works aspect of the project. As the general contractor, the company will supervise construction of a two-story control room, set up field instrumentation and handle start-up services for the plant’s three boilers.

The multi-million dollar contract calls for Westinghouse to install its Ovation System in Plant II at Zespol Elektrocieplowni’s site in the city of Lodz. The system will integrate the plant’s existing programmable logic controllers into one open environment, allowing the plant to modernize controls while reducing the need for operator and staff retraining.

The Lodz facility is one of the largest combined heat and power plants in Poland. The coal-fired plant supplies the Lodz city heating network, generating 3400 MW of thermal energy. It can also generate up to 590 MW of electricity.

The Ovation system uses an open architecture approach to eliminate concerns about obsolescence and dependence on proprietary systems. The system uses commercially available hardware and allows easy integration with customer’s existing IT systems.

New GT10C gas turbine is ready for action

Alstom’s latest gas turbine development, the GT10C, is now approaching the end of its test programme is scheduled to be commercially available this month (June).

Although the GT10C is an update on a 40-year-old design, it represents the latest in high efficiency, environmentally friendly gas turbine technology. It shares much of its design and componentary with Alstom’s GT10B and the successful larger GTX100. The Finspong, Sweden-based design team hope that it will operate with the same reliability and generate similar demand to its bigger brother.

Alstom sees the GT10C as filling a gap in the market for gas turbines in the 30 MW range. It is aimed principally at the oil and gas industry as well as for production of distributed power and cogeneration uses. Alstom has not produced a gas turbine specifically serving this market and has found that its GT10B turbine is short of power for today’s demand. Competition comes from Rolls Royce in the form of the RB211, Pratt & Whitney’s FT8 and FT8+ as well as GE’s 2500/2500+, PG5371 and MS5002D and E models.

Alstom’s research points to a growing global demand in the 20-34 MW market, particularly at the higher end. It estimates annual demand for this type of industrial gas turbine at 5000 MW. It expects that most demand will come from Europe and the Middle East, three quarters of which will be from the oil and gas sector. Demand for the product for power generation use is expected to grow from a modest eight per cent at present.

In the oil and gas sector, 80 per cent of installed units in the 27-34 MW range are operating in simple cycle and used in mechanical drives. Alstom has designed the GT10C to meet this market’s requirements for high reliability, high efficiency in simple and combined cycle, superior environmental performance and a competitive life cycle cost. The turbine is designed for duel fuel capability and can be used for both mechanical drive and power generation. The GT10C is a skid-mounted package with single lift capacity.

The GT10C is a twin-shaft machine with 11 compressor stages. The first two stages have variable inlet guide vanes. The rotor is composed of discs, which are electron-beam welded to a single robust unit. The first stage of the turbine inlet guide vanes has convection cooling with film cooled edges. Shrouded blades and honeycomb seals are introduced in the second stage.

The combustion chamber is of the annular type and is made of welded sheet metal. The inner surface of the combustor has a thermal barrier coating, which reduces the level of heat transfer and extends the lifetime of the unit. For each assembly, the 18 burners are removable from the outside. The two-stage power turbine is a free shaft turbine, where the discs are bolted to the shaft.

In power generation a gearbox is connected to the power turbine via a flexible coupling of membrane type. The gearbox reduces the turbine speed from 6500 r/min down to 1500/1800 r/min. In mechanical drive the flexible coupling is connected directly to the driven component, e.g. a pump or a compressor.

The GT10C is equipped with Alstom’s latest dry low-emission (DLE) technology offering dry emission control on both liquid and gaseous fuels. The Advanced Environmental Vortex (AEV) burner has already been used in other Alstom gas turbines. The AEV burner has a capability of limiting emissions down to 15 ppmv (at 15 per cent O2) when operating on gaseous fuel and 42 ppmv when operating on liquid fuel. The CO2 emission is limited to 25 ppmv (at 15 per cent O2) for both gas and oil.

Alstom has now completed its engine test of the GT10C including auxiliaries and control system in order to verify the component life for both mechanical drive and power generation. The engine test package included 1200 measuring points, including 150 rotating measurements. Alstom says the 25 start-ups and 50 hours of operation have gone very well.

The first commercial GT10C unit will be available in June 2002 and Alstom is in talks with a number of parties, mostly in the mechanical drive market, to take delivery of the first unit.
