Chinese power company orders 5,000 AMR units

VANCOUVER, B.C., Dec. 19, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) à‚–JST of the Guangdong Province, China, has ordered 5,000 automated meter reading units from IntraCoastal System Engineering Corp., the company reported.

IntraCoastal today received the purchase order for the company’s proprietary and patented Power Line Communication system.

The units will be used in meters installed in the city/area of Zengchen. This region, with a population of 758,000 and an estimated 500,000 electric meters has been selected for the initial commercial installation.

“The significance of this order is the fact that it is not for or subject to further testing,” said Wadhwani. “A pilot has been in place for approximately a year and the latest version of our software with the added functionality requested by our customer has been tested since October 2,000.

JST installed and tested some 305 meters using our current technology and only one meter experienced problems that were later attributed to a faulty sensor. Assuming these results continue,” added Wadhwani. “There is every reason to believe the use of our AMR/PLC product will be expanded to other areas within Guangdong Province that has a population of 75 million.. Even for the Zengchen installation alone, we believe usage will ramp up to approximately 3,000 to 5,000 units per month in the near future.”

“This is a major milestone in the evolution of IntraCoastal from a research and development basis into a commercial enterprise,” said Mr. Ted Ohashi, President and CEO. “There are several other prospective customers in China and elsewhere who have tested our product and could begin placing commercial orders during 2001.”
