China to reduce reliance on coal

China is attempting to reduce its dependence on coal with announcement of plans to construct five large hydropower stations costing $7.23bn by 2010, despite an overcapacity in many provinces.

The country also announced plans to build the the country`s advanced nuclear research reactor. Engineers have completed feasibility studies and the project is at the design stage, according to thee journal China Defence Industry.

The new 60 MW reactor is expected to be safer, more powerful and allows more expansive research than current reactors. The reactor will be an important tool in advancing China`s commercial nuclear power industry.
