Philipine electrification – Energy Secretary Vincent Perez said Monday President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo made a further appeal from the United States Aid for International Development to help the Philippine government in the electrification of the 3000 barangays in Mindanao.

Kansai Electric Power Co. and Osaka Gas Co. said Tuesday that they will set up a joint venture in January to develop new businesses and technologies. The new firm will initially be involved with six areas of research: using weather derivatives to reduce operating risks associated with changes in temperature, developing technologies for greening urban environments, for automatic remote meter reading and for recycling discarded products, and developing overseas businesses as well as ways to make greater social contributions.

Palawan is set to lose its territorial claim to the Malampaya-Gas-to-Power-Project if the House of Representatives approves a bill delineating the final and exact boundaries of the Philippine archipelago, says Dr. Jose Antonio Socrates, the province’s key advisor on the natural gas issue. Socrates said that House Bill 2031 filed by Rep. Apolinario Lozada has drawn the archipelagic baselines of the country to include the disputed Kalayaan island group as part of the national territory.

National Thermal Power Corporation India’s state-owned power company will soon invite expressions of interest for sourcing five million tonnes of liquefied natural gas fuel annually for its proposed gas-based power plants. “We will invite EoIs for supply of 5 million tonnes of LNG on a fixed price basis soon,” NTPC chairman and managing director C P Jain said at the Conference on Natural Gas.

Edison Mission Energy is extending the deadline for its current takeover bid for Contact Energy but has ruled out any increase in the bid price. The Contact cornerstone shareholder says its offer will now close on February 3 next year, the last possible date under takeover rules.

King Country Energy’s former general manager Peter Till has accepted a year-long contract in Iraq to help the people of Northern Iraq restore the electricity grid destroyed in the Gulf War, 11 years ago. This signals a whole new career path for Mr Till who is KCE General Manager (Generation) until Friday, and was overall general manager until early last year. Now he will be facilitating the new national grid, working for Australian Power and Water, which has a United Nations contract.

National Power Corp. the Philippine state-owned company (Napocor), will reduce its work force to make the company more attractive to potential investors once the government begins privatization next year, the BusinessWorld newspaper reported Wednesday. Napocor has about 8800 employees, the newspaper said. Napocor President Jesus N. Alcordo declined to specify how many jobs would be cut, according to BusinessWorld. Alcordo said Napocor will devise and implement a rationalization plan once the government approves a detailed privatization strategy for the power company.
