ABB contracts for Korean CFB
Korea Heavy Industries and Construction Company Ltd. (HANJUNG), has awarded ABB Combustion Engineering Systems a contract exceeding (US)$15 million to design, engineer and supply material and services for a second circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler at the Tonghae Thermal Power Plant in Korea.
Upon completion, the Tonghae Thermal Power Plant will be the largest and highest-pressure CFB project in Asia, according to ABB. Construction began in May, with commercial operation set for June 1999. Unit 1, awarded to ABB in 1994, is under construction and expected to enter commercial operation in 1998. Both 220 MWe boilers will incorporate a three-cyclone arrangement and will be fueled by Korean anthracite. The plant is sited in the Kangwon-do Province, about 200 km east of Seoul. HANJUNG will manufacture the boilers, which will be owned and operated by Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) and add to KEPCO`s operating grid system of more than 30,000 MW.
