State-owned Slovenian transmission system operator Elektro-Slovenija (ELES) has awarded a $4.8m contract to ABB subsidiary Ventyx for a new national control centre.

ELES chief executive Milan Jevšenak said the new system will “improve the critical functionality we need to further increase our operational security as well as the reliability of the power transmission network within Slovenia”.

The system, which is expected to go live at the end of 2013, will facilitate cross-border power trades throughout the Central Southeast European region, helping ELES to meet the latest directives from the European Union.

Richard Jones, Ventyx’ senior vice president of sales in Europe and the Middle East, added: “We are playing a significant role in helping European transmission systems to become more stable and less susceptible to major power outages.”
