A licence to run a transmission link to the Walney 1 wind farm in the Irish Sea has today been awarded in a deal worth £105m ($167m).

Following a tender process the licence has been won by Blue Transmission Walney 1, a consortium comprising Macquarie Capital Group and Barclays Integrated Infrastructure Fund.

Blue Transmission will buy the link from the wind farm owners Dong, SSE and OPW for £105m, with £52m of that sum coming from the European Investment Bank.

Work on Walney 1 started in March 2010 and the first of 51 turbines were commissioned in January this year. All turbines are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
