Heatwave prompts Delhi’s highest power demand

Officials at power distribution company BSES say they have had to take extra measures to cope with heatwaves in India,Delhi city which are challenging ability to meet power demand.

Delhi recorded India’s highest ever peak power demand on Sunday when soaring temperature (44.6 degrees Celsius saw need for 6,361 MW of capacity recorded in mid-afternoon.

BSES says it has signed up to long power purchasing agreements (PPAs) and banking arrangements with other states as well as strengthening the overall distribution network.

The peak demand of Delhi, even at the 6,000 megawatt level is three-fold that of Kolkata (2,100 MW) and about 60 per cent more than that of Mumbai (3,700 MW).
