Cross-border power auction

Cross-border electricity trading between England and France is to be opened up to competition for the first time next year, National Grid, the UK’s transmission operator, said yesterday.Capacity for the 2,000 megawatt interconnector which links England and France will be auctioned to generators from April.

Previously power imported to the UK from the continent has had to be purchased solely from Electricite de France under a long-term agreement which has been in place since the interconnector was opened in 1986.

Capacity for exporting power from the continent to Britain will be auctioned in 50mw blocks. The first 1,500mw will be allocated for three year power supply contracts, with 350mw allocated for annual contracts and the remaining 150mw to be auctioned on a daily basis. Matthew Jones
