Jamaica’s Energy and Mining Minister Clive Mullings has called for the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to immediately suspend the installation of smart meters, and the back-billing of customers, pending an enquiry by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).
JPS has complained of widespread meter tampering, which the minister claimed resulted in customers receiving “astronomical” bills.
“We believe that since there is an investigation being conducted by the OUR, the installation of smart meters and back-billing should cease until that investigation is completed,” he said.
“There are clear problems in relation to the billing practices of the JPS.”
He said that the ministry hoped the investigation would inform future decisions and bring stability to the sector.
These decisions will include details on how to deal with allegations of meter tampering and extensive back-billing, he said.
