Under its new Electric Industry Law, Mexico’s federal government is to set maximum rates for the transmission and distribution of electric power. It will do the same for the basic supply and the last-resort supply.

These rules were recently issued by the Official Journal of the Federation. Its Article 48 says prices must be based on market conditions, El Universal newspaper reports.

Private companies which want to supply energy independently will need permission from the Energy Regulating Commission if their capacity is equal to or greater than 0.5 MW.
