Congo transmission project gets $201m World Bank loan

The World Bank has approved a loan of $201.5m to expand transmission capacity in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The International Development Association grant is to the Southern African Power Market Project (SAPMP), which was set up to support integration and trade between countries in the Southern Africa Power Pool.

The pool connects the power systems of 12 countries: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.à‚ 

SAPMP will use the money to carry out an upgrade of a 2300 km long transmission line between DRC and Zambia.
