The American Wind Energy Agency says that the US wind turbine market has fallen sharply in recent years, despite a record installation of 13,130 MW in 2012, up 28 per cent on 2011.

Wind accounted for 42 per cent of all the new power generation capacity installed in the US last year as developers rushed to bring projects online before the feared end of the production tax credit for wind power.

The statistics show a drop in price of about a third in terms of dollars per megawatt of generation capacity since late 2008, according to a US government analysis using data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a research group.

The largest investor in new US wind power capacity last year was Florida-based NextEra Energy, followed by European firms, Iberdrola of Spain and EDF of France.
