REpower Systems is to unveil a 50 Hz version of its MM100 turbine at the Italian wind energy trade fair Eolica Expo Mediterranean this week.

Specially developed for low-wind locations, the turbine has a 2 MW capacity, a 100 metre tower and a rotor diameter of 100 metres.

A prototype of the MM100 50 Hz is to be built by mid-2012 with a launch planned for 2013. The MM100 was originally developed for the North American wind market with a 60-Hz version only being available until now.

Andreas Nauen, chief executive of REpower Systems, said: “We are currently experiencing great demand for large-rotor turbines. Not only in Germany, but also in Italy and France, where there are still a lot of low-wind locations with great potential.”

Eolica Expo Mediterranean runs on 14-16 September in Rome.
