German wind OEM Nordex has won a contract to deliver 65 turbines for a Brazilian wind mega-project.
The AW125/3000 turbines are slated for the 195 MW Lagoa do Barro project, which will incorporate eight separate windfarms over 2.9 ha in the northeastern Brazilian state of Piaui. The project will be operated by Brazilian wind power developer Atlantic Energias Renovaveis.
The turbines are to be delivered and installed from mid-2017, and the windfarms are expected to come online in 2018.
According to Nordex, the turbines were designed for optimum energy yield given the high winds at the Lagoa do Barro sites. The company said it expects to achieve an above average capacity factor of around 58 per cent.
In addition, Nordex said the projects have been structured to increase local manufacturing content, with the towers being locally produced.
“This reduces CAPEX, minimizes the environmental impact and creates local jobs,” said Patxi Landa, chief sales officer at Nordex.
