GE has won a contract to service all 264 tubines operated by independent wind company First Wind – the first time GE has clinched a deal covering an entire turbine fleet.

The eight-year deal covers Boston-based First Wind’s eight sites across the US, including Maine, Utah and Hawaii, and provides operations, parts and on-site support including a comprehensive maintenance package.

Michael Alvarez, president of First Wind, said: “We believe this service agreement will help us to optimize annual energy production and reduce the overall cost of electricity, both key factors for success in today’s challenging wind energy industry.”

Diarmaid Mulholland, general manager of wind services for GE Power & Water, said the deal showed “there is a growing demand across the wind industry for flexible service solutions that enable wind projects to perform at optimal levels of efficiency and availability”.
