E.ON and GE announce 300 MW US wind deal

GE will supply 300 MW of wind turbine technology for two wind farms in Illinois being developed by E.ON Climate & Renewables.

A total of 188 GE 1.6 MW wind turbines featuring 82.5-metre diameter rotors and 80-metre towers will power the Settlers Trail and Pioneer Trail projects.

Illinois is now the sixth state in the US for wind energy production, with more than 2286 MW of installed wind power capacity at the end of March 2011, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

In particular, the northern and central parts of the state offer wind speeds that make wind farms economically viable, said GE. These sites are also near existing high-voltage power lines, enabling cost-effective transmission to Chicago and other major Midwestern population centres.
