Chile to encourage joint energy investments by companies and communities

Chile’s energy ministry is to send a draft law to Congress designed to encourage association between the nation’s utilities and the communities that own the land on which energy projects are being carried out.

This initiative aims for both sides of the equation to invest in energy projects, with both turning a profit. à‚

Chilean president Michelle Bachelet announced the initiative during the opening of the Los Cururos Wind Farm (pictured), a model of partnership between utilities and communities.

The owners granted the project’s developers the land’s usufruct for 30 years in exchange for 3.5 per cent of the business profit.
